Why “UX Web Designer” Isn’t a Real Job Title
Nobody in the design industry calls themselves this. But thousands search for it monthly because they need someone to make their website look and work better. They just don’t know what to call that person.
Hire a UX designer when you need a UI designer: you get wireframes when you need screens. Hire a web designer when you need a product designer: you get a nice site that doesn’t solve the business problem.
| UX Designer | UI Designer | Web Designer | Product Designer | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| What they do | Research users, map journeys, wireframe, test usability | Design visual interfaces: layouts, typography, color | Design website pages and structure | Own full product experience end-to-end |
| Key deliverables | Personas, journey maps, wireframes, test reports | High-fi mockups, design systems, component libraries | Website layouts, landing pages, site mockups | All of the above + strategy |
| Primary tools | Figma (wireframes), Maze, UserTesting | Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD | Figma, Webflow, WordPress | Figma, Jira, analytics |
| U.S. annual salary | $80K–$120K | $75K–$115K | $55K–$85K | $100K–$150K+ |
| Offshore monthly | $1,500–$3,500 | $1,200–$3,000 | $800–$2,000 | $2,500–$5,000 |
Which Design Role Do You Actually Need?
“My website exists, but users can’t figure out how to use it.” → UX Designer.
“My website works fine, but looks outdated.” → UI Designer.
“I need a new website designed from scratch.” → Web Designer (for marketing sites) or UX/UI Designer (for web applications).
“I’m building a SaaS product and need one person to own design.” → Product Designer. For this level, explore our offshore UI UX specialist page or the broader hire product category.
The Screening Problem: Pretty Portfolios, Empty Reasoning
The failure we see most often: portfolios look polished, but candidates can’t explain their decisions. They can’t tell you why they chose a particular layout. Can’t explain what research informed the choices. Can’t articulate trade-offs between visual appeal and usability.
Design is fundamentally about decisions under constraints. A designer who decides based on “it looks good” instead of “this solves the user’s problem” will produce work that looks great on Dribbble and fails in production.
How to Screen Design Candidates
Step 1: Portfolio review with follow-ups. Pick 2–3 projects. For each: What was the business problem? What did research reveal? Why this approach? What would you change? If they can’t answer for their own work, they’re executors, not designers.
Step 2: Paid design exercise ($150–$300). Give a real problem: “Here’s our signup flow. Conversion is low. Redesign it and explain your reasoning.” Evaluate reasoning more than polish.
Step 3: Collaboration test. Give feedback on the first deliverable. Defensiveness = red flag. Curiosity = green flag. For evaluation prompts, see our interview questions for offshore candidates guide.

Where to Find UX and UI Designers
For UX Designers
Dribbble and Behance are portfolio showcases, not hiring platforms. Better: DesignRush, Clutch, ADPList communities, Toptal, or Pavago for dedicated offshore hires.
For UI Designers
Dribbble is actually useful here since UI is visually evaluable. Figma Community shows real component work. For dedicated offshore UI designers, explore our offshore web designer page. Eastern Europe and Pakistan produce strong talent.
For Web Designers
Webflow’s directory, 99designs, and DesignCrowd. One of the most cost-effective roles to offshore. Our hire offshore designers guide covers country-specific talent pools.
For Product Designers
Hardest role to fill. Needs UX + UI + strategy breadth. Toptal, DesignerHire, LinkedIn outreach. Offshore: Pakistan, Argentina, Brazil, and Poland have the strongest product design cultures.
We’ve placed UX/UI designers for clients who consistently report high satisfaction with the work. OneNine, for example, needed global design talent, and we matched them with professionals who delivered immediately. Read the OneNine case study on global design talent for the details.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a UX web designer?
Not a standard title. It maps to one of four roles: UX designer (research/flows), UI designer (visuals), web designer (page layouts), or product designer (end-to-end experience).
How much does a UX designer cost?
U.S.: $80K–$120K/yr. Freelance: $75–$150/hr. Offshore: $1,500–$3,500/mo.
UX vs UI?
UX = how it works (logic, research, flows). UI = how it looks (visual design, interaction). Many combine both, but at senior levels, these are distinct.
UX designer vs web designer?
Web designers optimize for visual appeal and brand. UX designers optimize for task completion. Marketing sites = web designer. Web apps = UX designer. For how designers and developers collaborate offshore, see our hiring offshore employees vs outsourcing guide.
How to evaluate a portfolio?
Look for process, not polish. Best portfolios show: problem, research, decisions + reasoning, iterations, measurable results. Red flag: only final mockups with no explanation.
Can I hire from another country?
Yes. Design is one of the most commonly offshored creative roles. Figma is cloud-based, and collaboration is async-friendly. The Philippines, Pakistan, Argentina, Poland, and Ukraine all have strong pools. At Pavago, we vet for reasoning ability and communication, not just visual execution.
Name the Role Before You Name the Budget
UX problem? UX designer. Visual problem? UI designer. Need a website? Web designer. Building a product? Product designer. Get the role right and everything else follows.
